Livewire Marlon Harewood added a second with a 22-yard shot and also slotted in after Elliot Grandin had an effort parried by goalkeeper Chris Kirkland. Steve Gohouri had a header disallowed for Wigan before Alex Baptiste's cross inadvertently added Blackpool's fourth. Wigan were comfortably beaten and it was the home side which looked more like the Premier League debutants than the more assured Blackpool, who were making their return to the top flight for the first time since 1971. Holloway refuses to get carried away after win Until Chelsea beat West Brom 6-0 in the later kick-off, the three points had also put Blackpool top of the table for the first time since the opening day of the 1957/58 season. Tangerines manager Ian Holloway had, in his own inimitable style, played down his side's chances ahead of the game as he questioned whether he had a team capable of surviving in the Championship, let alone among English football's elite. But, with eight of the mainstays of last season and three new signings drafted in as late as this week, the visitors overwhelmed a lethargic Wigan side that was missing Charles N'Zogbia to such a degree that the Latics were booed by their own fans. Fans make most of Blackpool debut Blackpool were surprisingly promoted last season thanks to a Brett Ormerod winner in their play-off final against Cardiff and the striker should have scored in the opening minutes at the DW stadium. However, he failed to make contact with a low Taylor-Fletcher cross from the right and again swiped without success when David Vaughan played the ball back from the left flank. Blackpool also went close when a nod back from a corner found debutant Harewood, who could not get over the ball enough and headed over. 606: DEBATE What are your thoughts on the game? But the Tangerines were rewarded for their early efforts when Taylor-Fletcher showed the composure Ormerod lacked to push the ball in at the far post following a Harewood cross. A lovely Blackpool move then ended in Taylor-Fletcher putting the ball in the back of the net before his effort was disallowed by linesman Paul Thompson. Taylor-Fletcher was furious as, although team-mate Ormerod was standing in an offside position, he was not. The visitors did not stew on the perceived injustice of the decision for long as they again left the Wigan defence flailing as Harewood broke through on goal. A last-ditch Gohouri tackle robbed the Tangerines striker of possession but the ball struck Ormerod and would have gone in, had it not been for a fortunate deflection off Harewood's back. Wigan's misery was compounded when Harewood extended Blackpool's lead with a long-range shot, which Kirkland got his fingertips to but could not stop from going in. Blackpool had been scheduled to play this fixture at home before it was switched because of on-going construction work at their Bloomfield Road ground and their travelling fans were left rubbing their eyes in disbelief as they added a third. Martinez unhappy with 'sloppy' Wigan Taylor-Fletcher laid the ball off to impressive debutant Grandin and, despite his shot being parried, Harewood was on hand to slot in as Wigan were jeered off at the break. The home side should have been given hope of making a comeback when Gohouri headed in a Ben Watson free-kick, only for linesman Thompson to rule out a goal for the second time in the match. But Wigan scarcely merited a way back into the game and their fans streamed out of the stadium early after Baptiste's cross was allowed to creep in at his near post by Kirkland. Meanwhile, Blackpool supporters were left to revel in the sunshine of a first away win in the top flight since beating Newcastle on 29 August 1970.
