Derek Riordan levelled on half-time, stabbing home after Jamie Langfield had parried a John Rankin effort. Vernon bundled a Paul Hartley cross in to win the game as Josh Magennis squandered three good chances to add to the Dons' lead. The win lifts Aberdeen off the bottom of the Scottish Premier League and brings to an end a miserable run of seven consecutive defeats. Hibs drop down to 10th spot and manager Colin Calderwood must be concerned by the lack of creativity and industry in his midfield, while returning skipper Chris Hogg had a calamitous day in central defence. With Aberdeen sitting very deep, the home side saw a lot of the ball but found it difficult to create openings in front of goal. Hibs centre forward Valdas Trakys was seldom seen in the penalty area, leaving it to Riordan to spearhead the attack and he was denied an early goal when failing to connect properly with an overhead kick inside the six yard box. Langfield was then off his line smartly to get down and block a Riordan shot at the back post, following a clever lofted pass from Liam Miller. The Dons were content to hit on the break and the tactic paid dividends nine minutes from the interval when Vernon sped away from the sluggish Hogg and delivered a great ball across the face of goal for Folly to tuck away. Hibs levelled just before the interval when David Wotherspoon released Rankin with a clever pass and the midfielder powered in a shot-cum-cross from the left that was too hot for Langfield to handle. With the Dons keeper pushing the ball back into the danger zone, Riordan was waiting on the six-yard line to gleefully place the ball home for his eighth goal of the season Mark Brown made two excellent saves to deny Aberdeen early in the second half. He did well to push away a curling free-kick from Paul Hartley and then excelled himself to get hands to a powerful Magennis header from the resulting corner kick. Brown was later exposed as Hogg crashed an attempted clearance against Magennis and the substitute hared in on goal. With the Hibs keeper going to ground, the Dons forward knocked the ball round him but then tumbled awkwardly and a fabulous chance to score was lost. The home side woke from their second half slumber to pose a threat as Riordan set Trakys up with a lovely back-heel but the Lithuanian toe-poked wide under pressure. Trakys was more impressive when he played in Wotherspoon and Langfield had to push away a fierce, rising effort from the youngster. A game that many expected to be a dour, defensive struggle was raging from end to end and Aberdeen regained the lead on 62 minutes when Vernon got across his marker in the six yard box to knock in a skidding Hartley cross with his chest. Hibs were immediately presented with an opportunity to level when Jerel Ifil's headed clearance fell invitingly for Wotherspoon but the Scotland U21 star scuffed his shot straight into the grateful arms of Langfield. A glorious cross from Rory McArdle found the unmarked Magennis in a central position 10 yards out but his header was smothered by Brown. Riordan fizzed a first-time shot inches wide after good work from substitute Danny Galbraith, who was later screaming for a penalty as Ifil shouldered him off the ball. The man in black took an age to wave play on, adding to the angst felt by the home support. Midfielder Ian Murray was twice thwarted by goal-line clearances as Hibs pressed in the closing minutes. His unconvincing shot squirmed under Langfield, only to be hacked away, with the same fate waiting for his header from the resulting corner.
