Lois Lane (original) (raw)

"Lois, you're a great reporter all on your own. You don't need a hero or some gimmick to make a headline."

The Blur to Lois, Stiletto

Lois Joanne Lane[10] is a renowned reporter working for the Daily Planet, Clark Kent's wife, and the bold outspoken cousin of Chloe Sullivan. Prior to that, she was a waitress at the Talon, campaign manager for Jonathan Kent when he ran for Kansas State Senate, chief of staff for Martha Kent as a Kansas State Senator, and a reporter for the Metropolis Inquisitor.

Since living at the Kent Farm for most of what should have been her freshman year of college, Lois has grown quite close to the Kents, even seeing Martha Kent as the mother she never had. Her relationship with Clark was initially full of teasing that sometimes got the best of them; however, they also looked after each other and offered each other advice. Eventually Lois and Clark became each other's closest friends outside of Chloe, but their teasing continued without fail. [_citation needed_]

Lois was the Maid of Honor at Chloe's wedding in November 2008. During the wedding, she finally was willing to show her feelings toward Clark and they almost shared a kiss, until Lana Lang showed up and interrupted them, Lois was upset and disappointed and found herself talking to Oliver, who called her out on her feelings toward Clark. The wedding ended disastrously when a raging monster kidnapped Chloe and severely injured Chloe's husband, Jimmy Olsen. Jimmy was transferred to Star City for care and Lois accompanied him, stating that she would stay with him until she heard from Chloe again. She finally returned a month later, after Jimmy was well and Lana's departure.

After that, she got closer to the Red-Blue Blur by temporarily disguising herself as a superhero named Stiletto. Clark decided to help Lois feel better about herself and her work after a dry spell at work. She spoke to the Red-Blue Blur before he confronted Doomsday and arranged to meet with him face-to-face, but she got into a fight with Tess Mercer and found the Legion ring Clark had left behind, which transported her a year into the future.

Clark was shown to be a broken man after Jimmy's death and Lois' disappearance, only showing any connection with his human side when it involved looking for Lois. Three weeks later, Lois returned with no memories of her trip other than a vivid dream. It was at this point in time Clark's feelings were shown as really beginning to change where Lois was concerned, showing that the romantic feelings were not as one sided as they originally were.

After five years of friendship, Lois and Clark fell passionately in love and decided to become a couple. Around the same time, Lois started helping the Blur, and came to the realization that she wanted to feel a higher purpose in life. Everything was seemingly fine for a while, but as time went on, Lois and Clark both continued to hide things from one another and their relationship began to strain. When Lois saw that Clark didn't seem to understand her need to do something important with her life, she decided to break up with him for the time being. While she loved him, she needed time to figure out what to do with her life.

Later as Zod was masquerading as the Blur, he revealed his identity to Lois and started to manipulate her into believing that Clark was a threat and was in possession of the Book of Rao. Clark tried to warn Lois about Zod, but when he refused to admit to the secrets he was keeping from her, she launched an investigation of her own. Lois gave Clark one more chance to come clean, telling him that Perry White asked her to go to Africa for work, hoping Clark would just be honest with her and ask her to stay. Clark did not tell her the truth about the Book of Rao and his involvement with Zod, instead he told her to go to Africa, upsetting her. Lois stole the Book of Rao from Clark while they were saying goodbye, intending to give it to Zod. Lois then discovered that Zod was not the Blur when he couldn't answer a question that the real Blur would know. Zod then tried to kill Lois, but she was saved by the Blur. Lois encountered the real Blur who shared a very passionate kiss with her in a darkened alley, after which she realized that Clark and the Blur were the same person.

After the kiss that opened her eyes to the truth, Lois made the decision to not tell Clark that she knew who he was. Instead, she found ways to not notice what Clark was doing so he could run off if needed. She was also acting as a supporter for Clark's alter-ego, telling Clark how great the Blur was and how much she needed him; trying to give Clark more confidence in himself while he was surrounded by anti-hero sentiment. When it became clear to her that Clark didn't realize that she knew the truth and that she was a weakness for his enemies to go after, she decided to go to Africa to work with Perry.

After a couple weeks of staying in Egypt, Lois returned to Metropolis, much to Clark's delight. The duo became partners at The Daily Planet again, and it was obvious that they wanted to resume their romance as well, but both were afraid to do so.

Lois and Clark have since admitted their love, followed by Clark revealing his secret to her. Clark received his own startling revelation that Lois already knew. Clark proposed to Lois, declaring his lifelong commitment to her by placing a ring on her finger after she happily accepted.

Lois would also find herself in precarious situations while chasing after a story where she'd have to dress in various costumes and disguises that for the most part are provocative in detail that give an adequate display of her physical beauty.

Lois in Season Ten.

When Lois joined the Daily Planet as a reporter, she began to wear a much more professional business attire wardrobe that would consist of a suit jacket, a trench coat, a vest, a dress blouse, a dress skirt and high heels. She has also worn evening dresses on special occasions as well. Since her relationship with Clark developed into a passionate romance, Lois has worn some of Clark's flannel shirts as well as his glasses as a sign of affection. Lois wears a heart shaped necklace that is a Kent family heirloom, given to her by Martha Kent.

Personality[]

"Being a hero's wife means never accepting defeat."

— Lois to Tess, Dominion

Lois' childhood and youth was spent on different army bases with her father, General Sam Lane, whom she refers to as "The General." As a result of her upbringing, Lois is strong, resourceful, and persistent. She is a slightly impulsive, if not head-strong woman. Lois is intelligent and has an extremely witty sense of humor. She is often considered one of the funniest members of Smallville. Always quick with a joke or a clever comeback, she often uses sarcasm and random, obscure references to illustrate her point.[11] She takes charge of or takes over in most situations. Lois is wildly brave, at times, and often risks her life by boldly crashing towards her goal, only to have to either frantically talk her way out of or physically defend herself in dangerous situations.[12]

Lois' familiar relationships give great insight into her motivations and actions. She is mature beyond her years, and often gives wise advice to her friends. She is as close as a sister to her cousin Chloe and is very protective of her. Lois has been shown to bravely do whatever it takes to ensure the safety of her loved ones.[13] Her nickname for Clark is "Smallville" and, during the first few years of them knowing each other, she verbally sparred with him almost every time they were together (Lois almost always won those challenges). On numerous occasions, Lois has also displayed her fierce determination to protect Clark's secret. She also strongly believes in Clark, and is determined to help him fulfill his destiny.

Lois' tough exterior seemingly covers underlying insecurities. She desperately seeks approval from her father, even though she feels like he abandoned her for his military duties after the death of her mother when Lois was 6 years old.[14] She blames herself for her sister Lucy's failures but is full of pride and admiration for her accomplishments. In addition, she has described herself as a "screw-up" and freely acknowledges when she has worsened a situation.[15] She also talks without thinking, causing her to often seem insensitive, but usually regretfully so.[16]

Due to Lois's unique personality and perceived shortcomings (stubbornness, boldness, lack of shame), she is often misunderstood or underestimated (sometimes both). Throughout the series, newspaper editors, Lana Lang, Lionel Luthor, Lex Luthor, and even Clark Kent and Chloe Sullivan have implied that they did not expect Lois to achieve much. However, Lois's unique personality is exactly how she has managed to succeed, as a journalist, and as an investigator for the Justice League.

Lois enjoys playing video games. She greatly enjoyed the video game console given to Clark by an appreciative Graham Garrett in Fade and referenced playing "Guitar Hero" in Bloodline and 1980s rock music. (Exposed, Crimson, Committed, Bloodline)

According to Gordon Godfrey, while being inhabited by the Dark essence, he pointed out to Lois that she had a spirit pure of heart, which prevented him from possessing her body. (Supergirl)

Lois is willing to do almost anything to get a story, including getting dressed up as a stripper, prison guard, vixen fighter, French maid, superheroine, golden bunny girl or a dominatrix. Despite this, she has been uncomfortable with using her sexuality outside of harmless flirting or a personal relationship; her exotic dance routine was clumsy until she was almost completely done with it, and her dominatrix routine was equally uncomfortable.

There is one exception to Lois' willingness to do anything for a story: she has been willing to put her support for heroes over her own career. Lois has said that her "worst fear in the world is to be alone in the world without heroes." She has refused to reveal both Green Arrow and The Blur's secret identities even though they would have been huge stories.

Lois is, in many ways, like Clark's superhero persona: she believes in truth and justice, much like Clark and she goes to great lengths to fight social injustice as a reporter, and these traits in fact led him to fall in love with her. Her willingness to put herself in harms way for justice, shows that she is an altruistic spirit with a strong moral compass.

There is one down-side to her moral compass however. Although generally open-minded, in the beginning of the series she tended to see the world in black and white. Because of this she openly expressed her disapproval if someone did something she didn't like, almost disregarding other people's feelings in the process. But as time goes by, and Lois becomes more exposed to the ambiguities of life, she becomes more sensitive about what she says about the decisions of others and develops an even more accepting personality.

Lois is a strong individual who has always stayed true to who she is. She is honest and only puts up a pretense when she is working undercover. Even so, she had trouble fully embracing her gifts in the beginning of the series. Case in point, Lois repeatedly denied her talent in journalism, despite growing evidence proving otherwise. But as she began to accept her prodigious investigative skills and learned to use them for the greater good, she came to fully embrace her identity.

Clark Kent revealed to a Lois from a parallel universe all the qualities he found most appealing about his Lois such as her ability to protect him by any means necessary, her loyalty and bravery in the face of danger and that she's a force to be reckoned with. But most importantly her unique ability to see right through him, straight into his heart and soul. (Luthor) Carter Hall mentioned how Lois was meant to be with Clark because she is able to make his burden of responsibility as a hero easier to bear, as well as to offer him as much comfort and support to never give up his never ending battle. (Shield)

Lois's moral integrity and status as a "normal" human who is not a "superhero", helps Clark maintain his connection with humanity and helps him maintain his moral principles.

Mera also commented on how Lois is exactly the type of woman Clark needs that treats him as her equal, not superior. (Patriot)Brainiac 5 mentioned what a remarkable woman she is, as well as telling him that she and Clark were destined to be together. (Homecoming)

Martha Kent mentioned to Lois that she is a perfect fit for Clark because she inspires him. (Beacon)

In 2017, Lois is shown to care about Clark deeply to the point of being overbearing and micromanaging. Even though they keep their professional lives to themselves, when Lois saw Clark from the past, not knowing he was from the past, she assumed Clark was having an off day and gave him a spare pair of glasses to keep people from realizing he's Superman, which almost happened had Lois not intervened. Even the 2017 Clark admitted Lois was a handful.

Powers and Abilities[]

Lois Lane possesses no superhuman abilities.

Physical Prowess: Lois gets daily exercise by running, swimming, and practicing martial arts. During her many exploits, Lois often demonstrates her above average athleticism. For example, she was able to easily pin Clark Kent while she was under the influence of Isis, even though (powers or no powers) he is much bigger than she is.

Highly Skilled Hand-to Hand Combatant: Lois had earned a third-degree black belt in Karate by the events of Fade and as such, she could already take down multiple people larger than herself. Throughout the series Lois has been able to hold her own in many fights. Following her first arrival in Smallville, Lois was able to defeat an armed soldier with ease. Lois also would have defeated the deadly assassin Roulette in hand-to-hand combat if Roulette hadn't had put a gun to her head at the last second. She along with Nightwing were able to hold her own against multiple armed men. Lois has proven to be one of the best non-superpowered combatants out there, being able to stand her ground against some of the best hand-to-hand combatants in the world, including the superhero Green Arrow.

Weapons proficiency: Lois has been seen firing side arms and sniper rifles with a great skill. She also can throw knives (as well as other things) with a deadly accuracy.

Expert Investigative Journalist: Perhaps Lois's greatest gift is her skill in investigative journalism. Despite not acquiring a college degree in journalism, Lois's innate investigative skills have allowed her to rise through the ranks of reporting with tremendous speed. She started working for the Metropolis Inquisitor for a short period of time, but after she wrote an expose on paranormal events, she was asked by an editor to work for The Daily Planet, the most influential news paper in the United States. After only three years of working in the Planet's basement offices, Lois was promoted to the penthouse offices of the Senior Correspondents. Perry White, a former award-winning reporter, said that Lois's skill with investigative journalism will take her to unbelievable heights of success. Lois is now considered the best reporter in The Daily Planet and one of the greatest journalists of her time. She has been able to uncover multiple, large-scale conspiracies throughout the course of her career. For example, she was able to find out Tess was trapped in Lex's mind as an artificial being. Her prodigious investigative skills have also allowed her to gain honorary membership in the Justice League as their investigator. When it comes to investigative reporting, Lois Lane has no equal.

Military Knowledge: As a military-brat, and daughter of General Sam Lane, Lois is strategic and won't back down easily. Her years of living on different military bases around the world have taught her much about military operations and strategy. Her knowledge of the inner-workings of the military has proven very useful in her investigations, especially when they involve warfare. Whenever Lois is in a combat situation, she uses clever tactics in order to survive. Her most commonly used tactics are distraction, persuasion, and surprise.

Alcohol Tolerance: She has an impressive alcohol tolerance, able to drink extensive amounts of alcohol and maintain consciousness. She won a drinking contest with a football player in Recruit and against Carter Hall in Shield.

Vulnerabilities[]

As a human, Lois is susceptible to many frailties:

Still, considering the numerous dangers she faces on a daily basis, it is quite impressive that she has not "died" more than twice. Many other members of Smallville have died many more times than this.

At first Lois shows Toyman first hand that he's not in control this time around in the game of manipulation as he was in their previous encounter when he tricked her into attempting to kill The Blur for him. And he accepts it by revealing that The Prankster is just a pathetic imitation of him and they worked together in the Queen Industries Research and Development department before Toyman started working for Luthor.

Winslow then asked Lois if Lex has asked about him since his return which leads Lois to retort that Toyman ranks pretty low in the mind of Lex Luthor since his memory has been erased. Toyman reveals his disappointment in the turn of events but also a new piece of the puzzle in the game their playing regarding Loomis as a person who doesn't understand the concept of gamesmanship and would cheat whenever he can and that he probably stole all of his Toyman's tech weapons that were laced with Kryptonite and although Winslow promised "Clark" he wouldn't reveal his secret to the world. Loomis would probably take advantage of it and exploit it. Lois began to worry.

Meanwhile at Joe Chill's FBI Hideout in Suicide Slums Superman and Batman fight The Prankster and Mr.Freeze but ultimately leads too Chill's death and Superman wounded severely as a result of the Prankster's bullets. Clark then questions what gives a Guardian or whoever is left the right to force other sentient beings into service. John says it doesn't matter, orders are orders and Superman is a soldier now.

Oliver asks what did they keep in the warehouse and Steve responds that there they kept debris that fell through the atmosphere during the contact with Apokolips, probably wanting to use these weapons like Intergang did a while back. They then say that D.E.O.'s mystics were able to conjure an image of the person responsible, an unidentified man wearing a big armor with highly advanced weaponry. Steve says that they dispatched Agent Chase and a field team their way and Oliver along with his "alter-ego" are invited to join the investigation. The ruler of Apokolips tells them that there isn't any other version of him in the multiverse, as there is only one Darkseid and until recently, he traveled to many universes to bring death and destruction. He also mentions the only reason Superman achieved to defeat him before was because he hadn't reached his full strength at the time. However, the Monitors succeeded to broke him, when he had already conquered this world. Superman then offers a deal to Darkseid, to help them board on one of the Monitors' ships flying overhead, and in return Clark will also give him something. Darkseid accepts the offer so, while Superman carries Lois and follows the Monitors' ship into the atmosphere, he fires his Omega beams towards the ship, opening its side door so Superman and Lois can get inside it just before the ship enters the Bleed. Once inside, they lay low while Monitors investigate the duo's forced entry, unaware that stowaways have entered the ship and fearing of Bleed contamination. Superman says to Lois he will try to make the Weaver hurt himself, as the Bleed can probably hurt him too. Just then, three more Weavers appear and they say that no one else from the multiple Earths has ever get aboard a Monitor's ship. Together, they render Superman unconscious. After Superman loses his senses and the Monitors take both him and Lois to a holding cell, until the Council decides their fate. Lois is shocked when she learns that the Monitors are actually going to consider Lex's offer. The Monitors then recognize Superman as the person who killed Ray-Lan, so they decide to sentence both of them to death so they won't be able to interfere again in their plans. They intend to kill Superman and Lois by jettisoning them into the Bleed, as no one can survive it, not even the Monitors. Superman says he can get them out of this situation, but Lois will have to trust him and let the Monitors kill him first.

Clark learnt that Lois was in possession of highly classified documents she had obtained from Nancy Adams.

Lois is smitten by Clark's heroic save.

Without hesitation Clark super sped and rescued Lois from the DDS agents revealing his powers to her which just made him even more attractive to her. Lois took Clark to Olsen's apartment and Lois said it's nice to have a meteor freak on her side. Clark started to protest saying he wasn't a meteor freak, but Lois won't let him. Clark asked if Lois minded telling him why she was public enemy number 1. Lois told him that she had highly classified documents that proved President Lex Luthor was putting the entire nation in jeopardy. Lois and Clark watched a video press conference where Lex talked about a looming threat that needed to be taken care of. Lois said the threat was phony and Clark replied it's not a surprise that Lex would lie. Clark asked why and Lois explained she overheard an agent say they were "taking the eagle to the mountaintop".

Lois said it meant they're taking Lex to a bunker for one reason only: nuclear war. Lois wanted to paste the news all over the Daily Planet website, but didn't understand why Lex would want to destroy Earth. Clark noticed Milton Fine and said that he was the reason. Clark explained that he's not human, he's an android and that's why he didn't care. Clark started talking in circles about how he thought the world would be better and Lois was slightly confused. Lois then thought Clark's an android and Clark didn't deny it, but didn't say he was either. They then form a plan to stop Lex by attending the press conference held in Smallville. But first Lois suggested that Clark needed to disguise himself so he would blend in more. Lois handed him a spare suit, her press I.D. badge and to complete the look a pair of glasses.

In the Comics[]

LoisLane-1

Lois Lane as she appears in the comics.

Lois is Superman's chief romantic interest and, in the current DC Comics continuity, his wife. Like Superman’s alter ego Clark Kent, she is a reporter for the Daily Planet. Depictions of Lois Lane have varied in the nearly 70-year history of Superman comic books and other media adaptations.

DailyPlanetAdd

Ace reporter for the Daily Planet.

In the current DC continuity, unlike the series, Lois never met Clark Kent before his arrival in Metropolis. Upon Superman's debut, she became highly infatuated with the Man of Steel and simply saw Clark as a foppish, clumsy co-worker. Eventually, she decided to date Clark, seemingly losing her infatuation for Superman, replacing it with serious love for her boyfriend. Clark proposed to her and she gladly accepted. Not long after this, Clark revealed his identity to her, which causes some shock for Lois, but she still said yes to his proposal. The two shared a lengthy engagement, which was broken off for a period, during which Lois left Metropolis to be a foreign correspondent for the Planet and came to truly accept the idea of being with Clark and Superman. She ultimately returned to Metropolis and became re-engaged and married to Clark.

First encounter

Lois meets Clark.

Despite being "the secret wife of Superman", Lois is highly respected by Clark's associates in the super-hero community, both as his wife and as a reporter. Many people have often wonder why Superman would chose a mortal woman as his wife, when he could be with any number of super-powered equals that he knows. However, many like Wonder Woman, Batman, Martian Manhunter and many other have all stated that her fierce personality, motivation and unquestionable love and support for Clark, leaves with no question in their mind why Clark fell in love with her, and in fact believe her to be part of what makes him a great hero. Even Clark's own enemies such as Lex Luthor, have noted Lois to be an impressive woman, as she had made it a point to stand up against them, even without Superman there to protect her.

Lois is renowned for her quirkiness.

In the comic books she and Clark adopted Lor-Zod, General Zod and Ursa's son, which Lois names "Christopher Kent." In a heroic move, Chris sacrificed himself to bring the escaped criminals invading the Earth back to the Phantom Zone. Lois and Clark have been searching for a way to bring him back, with the help of Clark's friend Mon-El. Recently Lois discovered Chris has aged into adulthood in a matter of months due to his time in the Phantom Zone and became the new Metropolis superhero Nightwing. Despite the age-jump for Chris, Lois continues to behave in mother-fashion, insisting that Chris continue to call her 'Mom', and even questioning Chris about his relationship with the Flamebird. Both she and Clark were heartbroken when Chris was lost a second time following the War of New Krypton.

Lois and Clark professing their love.

Lois is always a tough-as-nails journalist and intellectual equal to Superman. At first upon her introduction into the series in Season Four there was no guarantee for sure that Smallville was going to adhere to Superman mythology in which the couple were together, However as of Season Nine and the official confirmation from the producers for Season Ten have confirmed that Lois will end up with Clark.

Lois has shown she can fight for herself when she was trapped alongside Catwoman and the two managed to escape. Her other dealings with the Birds of Prey involved a tense standoff when she threatened to out Barbara Gordon as Oracle, and Barbara in turn threatened to reveal her husband's secret identity as Superman. Lois stood down.

In the controversial politically driven mini series, Decisions, it's revealed that Lois doesn't know Clark's personal politics. However, the book does allude that with her military background, she is a Republican, although she has been shown to have liberal leanings in regards to certain social issues such as gay marriage.

Clark tells Lois that she is the one that keeps him connected to humanity.

At the conclusion of Superman: Brainiac Clark released the city of Kandor and it became a life-size planet known as New Krypton, He felt that it was his responsibility to lead his people to live in peace with humanity by leaving earth and assuming the role of Commander Kal-El, before he left he told Lois that his heart belongs to her and her only and he would return once more to fly back into her arms. Superman took a leave of absence for a whole year during Superman: World of New Krypton he would briefly return to earth and be reunited with Lois to be brought up to speed on current events developing on earth. It wasn't until after the destruction of New Krypton by Lex Luthor and Lois's own father General Sam Lane that instigated a pointless War against Earth by General Zod in Superman: War of the Supermen that in the aftermath, Clark and Lois reunited and both reflect sadly on how New Krypton's appearance resulted in such a pointless war, Clark expressing his uncertainty about whether any Kryptonians are left in hiding on Earth while Lois promises to write the truth about her father's actions despite the media portraying him as a hero for his 'defensive action', hoping that someday humanity will be ready for interaction with other alien races.

Recently, following the War of the Supermen, Superman has taken to wandering the country, so as to re-evaluate his purpose on Earth. Lois has joined Clark at assorted points across America, often giving him advice and re-affirming his own resolve, as well as her own in regards to not having a normal family like.

Lois Lane as she appears in the comics after the relaunch.

In the New 52, Clark and Lois were not married and the pair shared a purely professional working relationship and were close friends, although Clark seems to have unrequited romantic feelings towards Lois. She viewed Clark as a friend and respected him as a journalist, but regarded him as a loner who has difficulty letting people get close to him. She was also unaware that Clark Kent is Superman. Lois Lane then worked for Morgan Edge, heading up the media division of the Daily Planet. has now return as a reporter to the Daily Planet, she was in a relationship with a foreign correspondent named Jonathan Carroll, but finally broke up.

At some point, Lois investigates the story of twenty people who developed metahuman powers after being kidnapped by Brainiac. Her search leads her to a U.S. senator, who revealed to be one of the Twenty. The senator dies, but not before transferring his powers to Lois, who falls into a coma. Lois later awakes from her coma at the hospital, with Jonathan at her side. Lois manifests psychic powers and helps Superman fight the Psychic Pirate. During the fight, Lois learns that Clark is Superman but falls back into a coma. After defeating the Psychic Pirate, Superman brings Lois back to the hospital. Later, the Parasite attacks the hospital and attempts to steal Lois' powers. Superman tricks the Parasite into absorbing Lois' psionic energy. The power overwhelms the Parasite, causing him to collapse. Lois awakens from her coma but she does not seem to remember Superman's identity.

Then came the relaunch known as "Rebirth", where this version of Lois becomes Superwoman (she absorbed the powers of her Superman, who is a mere mortal since). In the meantime, Superman's role was taken by the one from the previous continuity, who settle down in this reality with Lois (who is still his wife) and their newborn son, Jonathan.

Sups Family

Lois pleads with Clark to mentor their son Jon.

Even though she's now a mother, Lois still purses her career as a journalist and even joins her husband and son on some of their adventures. Lois sees Jon having a tremendous potential to become a hero of his own and encourages Clark to mentor and guide him as he has now taken up the mantel as Superboy.
