New encampment calls for closure of Tel Aviv office and divestment from major Quebec fund

Funded by the Community Radio Fund of Canada, CKUT’s Local Journalism Initiative will publish local news stories from reporter Jules Bugiel.

On Saturday, over 50 activists established a popular encampment in downtown Square Victoria.

Led by Desinvestir pour la Palestine, the Al-Sumud People’s Encampment is calling on Quebec to close its new Tel Aviv office.

They’re also calling on the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, one of the largest institutional investors in the world, to divest from 87 companies complicit in the war on Gaza.

We’ve been broadcasting 24/7 for decades so for new ears it can be a little hard sometimes to know where to dive in. With hundreds of volunteers in the mix at any given time, even here at the station it can be tricky to know what is going on at times.

So – we’ve been trying to use our Featured Archives zone as a way to highlight great programming. It’s by no means an exhaustive list but it’s a good place to start if you’re trying to listen to some recent CKUT archives.

Thanks to our new website (WFMU heads might find it feels familiar) hosts are able to post playlists for their programming and help shine some light on the artists and figures hitting the air.

We’re hoping to turn this into a sort of “This Week at CKUT” update… stay tuned.

UNIDENTIFIED TRACKS FROM THE GOLDEN AGE OF COLLEGE RADIO

Show For Children host Spookyrat has been on a quest to discover new music from old CKUT broadcasts that his dad recorded off the air in the 90s.

Problem is, the obscurity on these tracks is a force to be reckoned with.

Spooky has made some significant progress over the past couple years tracking down a lot of stuff but these have proved to be elusive.

Do you recognize the artists of any of these tracks? Please let us know.

Soul Perspectives This Week with CKUT fam Miss Benn

Soul Perspectives concludes its celebration of Black Mothers in May with guest Amanda Benn. A dancer, choreographer, leader, long-standing community and youth worker. These are the titles that Amanda is deeply rooted in. Above all these roles, Amanda has become a mother which has shifted her perspective in everything in life, enabling her to explore deeper purpose in the arts.

Over the years she has performed on stages in Trinidad, the United States, Toronto and in every corner of Montréal. Blessings stages with genres such as stepping, jazz, afro jazz, musical jazz, hip-hop, Afro-Caribbean Folklore and dancehall. Her experience as a competitive dancer has aided her to adapt quickly within a group. Life itself continues to teach her to care for oneself so that you can be your best amongst others.

Her endeavors include writing, directing, and performing her own theatre work. Teaching workshops and classes to everyone that can move from toddlers to seniors and everyone in-between. There are great dancers but few good teachers and Amanda considers herself to be one.

It is not what you teach, it’s how you teach. It’s not the steps you count, it’s how you move.
