Newspaper Articles Newspaper Articles 14th December 1905 Mining Fatality at Croft Pit A sad fatal accident occurred at Croft Pit, Whitehaven, on Tuesday evening last, whereby a man named John Gribbons lost his life, whilst returning from work. It appears that his day's work was over, and he was returning by the incline when by some means or other a set consisting of eight tubs came in contact with him and the injuries proved fatal. The time of the accident was stated to be about 7.40 p.m., the time the deceased's watch stopped, the glass being broken. Gribbons who is 54 years of age, resided in Peter's Court, Church-street, and leaves a son and daughter, both grown up, to mourn his loss.
