The International Day of Peace 2024 theme is Cultivating a Culture of Peace.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption of the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace. In that declaration, the Assembly recognized that peace is not only the absence of conflict but also requires a positive, dynamic participatory process where dialogue is encouraged, and conflicts are solved in a spirit of mutual understanding and cooperation. New York, United Nations, September 13, 2024 — Below are UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ remarks at the Peace Bell ceremony in New York today:

“We are gathered here today to emphasize the importance of peace. At the United Nations, peace is our primary objective, guiding principle, and fundamental belief. However, peace is currently under threat, and war is prevalent.

“From the Middle East to Sudan, Ukraine, and beyond, we witness the devastating effects of bullets and bombs, resulting in casualties, trauma, and widespread destruction.

“Simultaneously, the pillars of a peaceful world are deteriorating. There are escalating geopolitical divisions, widening inequalities, the proliferation of misinformation fueling hatred, misuse of new technologies without regulations, and the climate crisis causing instability, resource depletion, and displacement of communities.

“International institutions need to be better prepared to respond, and there is an opportunity for change. Later this month, at the Summit of the Future, we can initiate the process of reform and revitalization:

“In essence, we must foster a culture of peace. This year’s International Day of Peace is dedicated to this theme. It is a cause that all peace and justice advocates must support today and every day throughout the Summit of the Future and beyond.

“This is the call we make today. May it resonate across the globe.

“Before I ring the Peace Bell, please join me in a moment of silence to contemplate the significance and necessity of peace—and how each of us can contribute to creating the conditions for a peaceful world to thrive.”

Teams were awarded points based on navigating a half-mile obstacle course, conducting mission-specific task challenges, and completing multiple safety and design reviews with NASA engineers.

“This student design challenge encourages the next generation of scientists and engineers to engage in the design process by providing innovative concepts and unique perspectives,” said Vemitra Alexander, HERC activity lead for NASA’s Office of STEM Engagement at Marshall. “While celebrating the 30th anniversary of the challenge, HERC also continues NASA’s legacy of providing valuable experiences to students who may be responsible for planning future space missions, including crewed missions to other worlds.”

HERC is one of NASA’s eight Artemis Student Challenges reflecting the goals of the Artemis program, which seeks to land the first woman and first person of color on the Moon while establishing a long-term presence for science and exploration. Toronto, April 22, 2024 — The 2024 FIDE Candidates tournament has concluded, revealing the Challengers for the World Championship. Gukesh Dommaraju, an Indian prodigy, has made history as the youngest World Chess Championship Challenger. His remarkable journey will lead him to face the reigning World Champion, Ding Liren, at the end of this year. Meanwhile, Tan Zhongyi, a formidable player, will face her compatriot Ju Wenjun in the Women’s Championship matchup.

Gukesh D played against Hikaru Nakamura and needed to draw at least to secure first place. He was playing with the black pieces and rose to the challenge admirably. Gukesh surprised Nakamura with a clever move early in the game and achieved an equal position. Magnus Carlsen, the world’s top-rated chess player, provided live commentary on one of the streams and praised Gukesh’s 11…b4 move, saying, “I love what Gukesh has done. It’s something I haven’t seen before.” By the 20th move, Gukesh had gained a pawn, but the position was still drawish. Nakamura never really risked losing in this game, and both players logically drew the game.

The tournament’s fate hung in the balance during the match between Fabiano Caruana and Ian Nepomniachtchi. Both players were in a must-win situation, setting the stage for a nail-biting showdown. This intense game had every chess fan on a rollercoaster of emotions as Caruana and Nepomniachtchi quickly navigated into a complex position where victory, defeat, or a draw were all possible outcomes.

Playing with White, Caruana got an ultimately winning position, and it looked like a playoff would decide the tournament outcome. However, the player blundered on the 41st move (41. Ka1 instead of 41. Ka2), allowing Nepomniachtchi a path to a draw.

After 109 long moves in the FIDE Candidates Tournament, the players finally agreed to a draw, making Gukesh the winner. At the post-game press conference, Caruana criticized himself, saying, “I feel like an idiot.”

At the end of the tournament, Gukesh couldn’t contain his joy, expressing, “I am so relieved and happy. After that intense game between Caruana and Nepomniachtchi, I was extremely emotional. But now I am feeling quite good.”

From the players tied for second place, the Sonneborn-Berger tiebreak puts Hikaru Nakamura in second place and Ian Nepomniachtchi in third, with Caruana finishing fourth.

FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament

Tan Zhongyi, leading the FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament, only needed a draw to win the tournament. In her game against Anna Muzychuk, Tan played a sharp line of the Sicilian Defense, showing she was well-prepared. By move 15, she had a 5-minute lead on her clock. However, on move 16, Anna Muzychuk made a questionable move 16. Qd3 and Tan had to think for the first time in the game. Despite this, Tan found the best continuation and obtained a solid advantage. Unfortunately, she could not convert it into a win, and the game ended in a draw. Nevertheless, this result was enough for Tan Zhongyi to claim the overall victory and become the next Women’s World Championship title challenger.

IMF

Washington, DC, April 16, 2024 — On Tuesday, the IMF released its World Economic Outlook for April 2024, with some positive news to report. The global economy is projected to continue growing steadily at a rate of 3.2% in 2024 and 2025, which aligns with 2023’s growth rate. While this is slightly below the historical average of 3.8%, it’s still a positive sign of continued economic activity. Additionally, global headline inflation is expected to decrease from an average of 6.8% in 2023 to 5.9% in 2024 and then further to 4.5% in 2025.

Since October 2023, the global economic landscape has seen a reduction in risks, leading to a more balanced distribution of potential outcomes around the baseline projection for international growth. However, it’s important to note the potential upsides that could further boost the economy. These include fiscal policy proving to be more expansionary than expected or advancements in artificial intelligence boosting productivity, offering a glimmer of hope for a more prosperous future.

Overall, the IMF’s chief economist, Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, underscored the need for smooth inflation convergence to target levels and rebuilding fiscal buffers to guard against future shocks. Additionally, intensifying supply-enhancing reforms would facilitate inflation and debt reduction while allowing economies to increase growth toward higher pre-pandemic averages. However, the most pressing call is for world leaders to strengthen multilateral cooperation. It is not just a suggestion but a necessity to make progress on common goals such as climate change and mitigate the costs of geoeconomic fragmentation.

UGC India asks Universities to announce their Academic Calendar

UGC

Academic calendars are not just a set of dates but the backbone of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). They enable universities to meticulously plan and execute educational activities, ensuring students receive a quality education. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued guidelines for universities to follow when creating academic calendars, which include specific timelines for different courses’ commencement of classes and the declaration of results.

Moreover, universities must announce their academic calendar at the beginning of each academic year, including all educational activities and dates for degree awards. By complying with these guidelines, HEIs can promote quality teaching, learning, and research.

Therefore, the UGC has asked all HEIs to adhere to the timelines prescribed by the UGC or the relevant Statutory Regulatory Councils, where applicable.

LONDON, April 13, 2024 — Twenty years ago, Dove launched the Campaign for Real Beauty, a global movement that revolutionized beauty standards by showcasing its natural form. In 2004, the campaign unveiled a startling truth: only 2% of women believed they were beautiful. Since then, the Campaign for Real Beauty has been a beacon of change, challenging the beauty industry, society, and media worldwide to redefine their portrayal of women and be more transparent about digital manipulation. The campaign has been a powerful advocate, urging them to confront the detrimental effects of unrealistic beauty standards on women and girls.

In November and December 2023, Edelman DXI, a global research, analytics, and data consultancy, carried out a 25-minute online survey in 20 different countries around the world, including Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, KSA, Mexico, the Netherlands, the Philippines, South Africa, Sweden, Turkiye, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

Based on the above research and in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Campaign for Real Beauty, Dove conducted a comprehensive study to gain insights into how beauty affects women and girls globally. While there is some positive progress, unrealistic beauty standards are still a cause for concern.

Singer-songwriter Jessie J has highlighted the immense pressure women and girls face worldwide due to societal expectations of appearance, especially in the music industry. The ever-changing definitions of beauty make it difficult for them to feel accepted and confident in their skin. Therefore, Jessie J has partnered with Dove to promote a message of embracing natural and honest beauty that celebrates the individuality of all women.

Dove reaffirms its unwavering commitment to promoting transparency and diversity and shattering beauty stereotypes in emerging media. The company stands firm in its decision never to use AI to represent real women in its ads. Dove will establish the Real Beauty Prompt Guidelines to set new digital representation standards.

“At Dove, we are committed to protecting, celebrating, and championing Real Beauty. Our pledge to never use AI in our communications is just one step. We will not rest until beauty becomes a source of happiness for every woman and girl,” Alessandro Manfredi, Dove’s Chief Marketing Officer, stated.
