Paul J McAuleyPaul J McAuley was born in England on St George's Day 1955. He has worked as a researcher in biology in variousuniversities, including Oxford and UCLA, and for six years was a lecturer in botany at St Andrews University. When Paul was 20, the first short story he ever finished was accepted by the American magazine Worlds of If, but the magazine went bankrupt before publishing it and he took this as a hint to concentrate on an academic career instead. He started writing again after a period as a resident alien in Los Angeles, and is now a full time writer.His first novel, Four Hundred Billion Stars, won the Philip K Dick Memorial Award, and his most recent novel, Fairyland, won the 1995 Arthur C Clarke Award for best SF novel published in Britain and the John W Campbell Award for best novel. In 1995 his short story 'The Temptation of Dr Stein' won the British Fantasy Award, and in 1996 his novel Pasquale's Angel won the Sidewise Award for Best Long Form Alternate History fiction. As well as short stories and novels, he writes a regular review column for the British SF magazine Interzone, and also contributes reviews to Foundation. Child of the River, the first volume of The Book of Confluence, set ten million years in the future, was published in September 1997. He lives in London.
