Machacamarca was the first locality in the world for augelite crystals (type locality augelite was not well-crystallized).

NOTE: Recent magnetite specimens being marketed from Bolivia, allegedly from this district, are wrongly labelled: The true locality is the San Calixto prospect on Mt. Huanaquino, roughly 20 km N of Potosí city. Specimens from other mines in the Machacamarca district are often labelled simply "Machacamarca".
