The Soviet-Indian international crew comprised ship's commander Y V Malyshev, flight engineer G M Strekalov (USSR) and cosmonaut-researcher R Sharma (India). They docked with the Salyut-7 orbital station to conduct scientific and technical studies and experiments.
Indian cosmonaut Rakesh Sharma conducted an Earth observation program concentrating on India. He also did life sciences and materials processing experiments and became the first yoga practitioner in zero-G.
