Official Chinese Academy of Sciences Biography

Zhuang Yuzhi (Chuang Yu-chih)

(1924.7.27 - 1996.3.23)

Physical metallurgist. Born in Chaoan, Guangdong Province. Graduated from Tangshan Engineering College, Jiaotong University in 1946. Went to Liverpool University, UK for further study in 1947 and received MS and Ph.D.. Research professor and vice president, Science and Technology Commission, Ministry of Labor.

Zhuang was engaged in the studies on non-metallic inclusions in steel, striated inclusions in the steel plate made in Anshan Iron and Steel Corporation, and the phase transformation and enbrittlement of heat-resisting stainless steel. He made contributions to the quality improvement of alloy steel and the restoration of production in the Third Petroleum Plant. He was a pioneer in the field of refractory metals used in space industry. He took charge of the design and manufacture of equipment for vacuum smelting of refractory metals and their performance testing, which were on the advanced level in China. He developed the molybdenum piercer used for stainless steel pipes for Anshan Seamless Steel Tube Factory, whose life is 200 times longer than that of the low-alloy steel piercer made in the USSR. He developed the coated molybdenum alloy shield and niobium alloy antenna for recovery satellites and contributed to the successful launch and safe recovery of China's first recovery satellite. He also developed Mo-30W corrosion-resisting alloy, whose life is 100 times long than that of previous ones, filling a blank in China.

He was elected Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1980.
