The South Australian rover debuted for Central Districts in <1969> and won their Best and Fairest award in <1975> and <1976>. He played for South Australia twice, including the <1975> Interstate Carnival, before crossing to Melbourne in <1977> after finishing second in the Magarey Medal. At first Central Districts refused to clear him, leaving him on the sidelines until Melbourne paid a $50,000 transfer fee.
Norsworthy had a bright start with six Brownlow Medal votes in his first six games but played just 15 more. A broken jaw two minutes into Round 1, 1978 left him in hospital and out of the senior side until Round 7. He returned low on confidence and struggled to hold a place in the side, playing 13 matches for the season. In early <1979> he was informed that he was no longer wanted as his playing style didn't suit the club. He continued to train with the side to fulfil his contractual obligations, first with teammates, then on his own by request of the club as they claimed his presence was unsettling other players. At first he ran laps of the , before being ordered to train on his own outside the ground. He was cleared back to Central Districts, who had approached him about a return before the season, midway through the year, and played 158 games in total.
