Previously on Collingwood's list without playing a senior game, Vanthoff was recruited by Melbourne in <1930>.

A crumbing half-forward and forward pocket who could also play as a rover, he was a near regular in his first four seasons on the list and played state football in <1933> before only managing five games in <1934>.

Dropped from Melbourne's list in April <1935>, Vanthoff played for side Camberwell in <1935> and <1936>. He served with the Air Force during World War II.

During his career, Vanthoff worked as a curator for the . He continued in the role after leaving Melbourne.
