After finishing school, Walsh gave up football for five years before joining Richmond United. From there he was recruited by club Preston, where he spent two seasons before joining Melbourne's in early <1934>. He was picked for the last three senior games of the season before returning to Preston. That year Walsh was best on ground in Melbourne's premiership side.

In his first match back at Preston, Walsh suffered a season-ending broken leg. He trained with in the <1936> pre-season, before returning to Preston. From there he played with General Motors-Holden in <1938> and <1939>, then Moe in <1940>. He served in the RAAF during World War II, and played for an Air Force representative side in <1942>. In <1944> he returned to the VFL, playing one game for at age 33, before returning to Preston again the next year.

Walsh trained with in the <1936> pre-season. He returned to play one game for in <1944> aged 33., and was at Preston again in <1945>.
