Recruited by Melbourne after training with while still at school, Kenneally started <1959> on the supplementary list and played for the first half of the year. He declined payment for the first season to protect his amateur status in case his senior career didn't pan out, accepting just one pound a week to cover travelling expenses.

Initially a wingman, Kenneally played two games in his first year but found it hard to break into a strong side after that. After twice appearing as a reserve he was allowed to return to school football and appeared in a representative game.

The next year he became a regular first team player, starting the year third in line for a wing spot behind Ian McLean and George Milner, but benefiting from McLean being dropped and Milner injured to open a spot for him. He held his place on the wing through that year's Grand Final victory. That year he also won a "long kicking" competition at the Showgrounds.

Kenneally won a second flag in 1964, but had become a half-forward flanker. As the understudy ruck/rover to Ron Barassi he found himself shouldering more of the load that season and was thrown into the role full time after Barassi defected to Carlton. In <1965> he was appointed vice-captain and ran third in the Best and Fairest. That year he played every game, and repeated the feat in <1966>.

Selected to play for Victoria for the first time in <1967>, Kenneally missed his first ever career game because of injury in Round 15, 1968. In <1969> a torn groin muscle restricted him to two senior games, in Round 1 and Round 20, before retiring. He played in that year's premiership.

Kenneally joined side Prahran in <1970> and played in premierships that year and <1973> before retiring.
