Career Statistics

Originally signed as Melbourne's second pick from the first VFL Draft after playing in an SANFL premiership with Port Adelaide, the rugged defender crossed from the SANFL at the start of <1984> and won a Best and Fairest the next year. He was often called on to play in other positions, including the ruck, ruck-rover and as a centreman.

Hughes had an ongoing rivalry with Collingwood's Brian Taylor which stretched across several seasons. Hughes captained the 1987 Night Grand Final side in the absence of Robert Flower who was out with a broken finger.

He served as Vice-Captain in <1988> and <1989> but returned to Adelaide to join the Adelaide Crows for their inaugural season in the AFL. He retired from AFL football at the end of that year and rejoined Port Adelaide in the SANFL where he played until the end of <1993> before coaching Redcliffs. In <1998> he joined Mildura as coach and remained with them through <2000>.
