A midfielder, Bourke played nine games each in his two seasons at the Demons before joining the Brisbane Bears for their inaugural season. He failed to win a spot on the list but decided to stay in Queensland and joined Morningside.

Despite undergoing a knee reconstruction in <1988> He played 187 games, won the Grogan Medal for best player in Queensland in <1989> and <1993>, played in three premiership sides and represented the state ten times.

Bourke is a member of the Queensland football Hall of Fame.
