Rover who initially travelled to Victoria in 1916 to play with . Even though Sturt were happy to clear him after one season, the South Australian league refused. He sat out two seasons before joining North Melbourne in 1918.

Known for his high stamina and ability to rove all day, he played 14 games in Melbourne's winless <1919> season before returning to add six the next year. At the end of <1919> he was was picked for a match between VFL and VFA players who worked in the public service. He played for the team representing federal government employees.

Tonkin was cleared to side Brighton before <1923> where he remained until <1925>. In May <1928> he was cleared to the Canberra competition.
