After a good run of form early in the season the Redlegs suffered their second straight heavy defeat, and for the second week in a row the match was over at half time. This time the loss came not a red hot premiership fancy in Fitzroy, but the winless Pivotonians who had lost their seventh match in a row the week before.

Kicking with the wind in the first quarter Melbourne had their chance to put Geelong in their place, but their ten scoring shots were wasteful and only resulted in two goals against a stout defence. The visitors started the second quarter well, but when Geelong got going with the wind they made no mistake by kicking six goals.

Melbourne kicked the first three goals of the third quarter, but Geelong then added five against the strong breeze to kill the contest. The home side were quicker to the ball, used it better when they got it and were untroubled by the heavy conditions while Melbourne lacked cohesion and were often caught out by a tricky wind. By three quarter time the margin was nearly eight goals, and the home side went on to win easily.

Haines, Odgers and Gray were best.
