Gerald 'Gerry' Donnelly was a wingman who started his career with Essendon Juniors before transferring to South Australia. Returning to Victoria he debuted strongly with the Redlegs and was selected for Victoria in his first year before the league ruled that he was ineligible to play for Melbourne under zoning rules. He had lived in North Melbourne's zone before moving to South Australia.

As a result he moved to the Shinboners the next year and captain-coached them during the season. In <1927> he moved to Albury as part of his employment and coached St Patrick's. He returned to North in <1930>. After his opportunities with the Shinboners dried up he moved to Essendon during the season for three games more.

His brother Andy played 12 games for in <1920> and <1921>, and he was also cousin of Essendon player Charlie Hardy.
