Drafted two years into his senior career, Bassett was promoted to Melbourne's senior list after Round 4, 1997 to replace Craig Turley. He lost his chance to play a game after suffering a fractured sternum in the next reserves game, returning late in the year to play out the season in the seconds before being swapped to for Matthew Collins and Brent Williams.

Bassett played 13 games in his first season in Adelaide, but lost his spot late in the season and missed the Crows premiership triumph. He remained with the Crows until the end of <2008>, then rejoined Norwood, staying there until <2003>. He coached Norwood from <2010> to <2013> before being appointed an assistant coach with . In <2015> he became an assistant at Port Adelaide. In the absence of regular coach Ken Hinkley, Bassett coached against Melbourne in Round 18, 2022.

Bassett's brother Scott played for Port Adelaide and Western Bulldogs between <1999> and <2004>.
