Giles kicked 54 goals in 17 games for Sandringham from <1976> to <1978> before joining the Demons. He was best and fairest of their 3rds in 1976 (including one 14 goal haul against Caulfield), before playing in all three grades the next year - including a senior grand final. He led the Sandy goalkicking with 44 goals in 1978.

Always desperate for a goalkicker, the Demons recruited Giles in 1979, but he spent most of his time at Melbourne as a defender.

Despite having a contract until the end of <1985>, Sydney approached him with a big money offer to switch before the <1984> season. He remained loyal. In <1985> Giles also served on the coaching panel of club Mordialloc, under his ex-teammate Garry Baker.

Relatively injury free throughout the start of his VFL career Giles suffered a serious knee injury against Collingwood in Round 14, 1985 and didn't play again until Round 11, 1986. Returning overweight and unfit it was his only senior game for the year but he returned to play 13 games in <1987>. In <1986> he also served as chairman of selectors at Prahran.

The highlight of his year was the 1987 Night Grand Final victory, the Demons first silverware since the 1971 Night Series Final. It was Giles who shrug off a tackle by Neale Daniher and fired a handball to Bret Bailey who kicked the winning goal.

Despite his heroics in the Night Final, Giles didn't feature in the senior team after Round 17. He joined side Prahran in <1988>. He had talks with St Kilda and Hobart, but wanted to finish his career in the company of his older brother Glenn and younger brother Scott. He retired at the end of that year.

Glenn and Peter had already played together, crossing to the Demons from Springvale for two games in 1981 before returning to the .
