One of only three players to win a Brownlow Medal at two different clubs, the ruckman struggled with hamstring injuries in his last season at and despite being their captain he opted to leave at the end of <1982>. There had been newspaper reports early that season claiming Moore and fellow Brownlow winner Kelvin Templeton had been shopped as a package to Melbourne, and North Melbourne.

Moore was out of contract at the end of <1982>, and unsuccessfully tried to persuade him to stay and play under new coach Jack Cahill. At first they refused to clear him, but Moore was prepared to sit out of football if necessary. He threatened Supreme Court action for restraint of trade before a transfer deal was struck, costing Melbourne between 150,000and150,000 and 150,000and170,000. He was subject to a vigorous physical examination by the Demons, with executive director Dick Seddon saying: “If you are buying a motor car you take it for a road test. We had Peter medically examined yesterday by our own doctor and he’s 100 per cent sound”. Moore had trained on his own before being allowed to join Melbourne, and was confident of hitting the ground running.

There was no waiting for a first meeting with the Pies, taking them on in Round 1, 1983. Supporters of his old club greeted their former captain with a banner reading 'Moore Filth'. He played 16 games despite missing a month with a fractured jaw suffered in Round 11. At the end of the year Moore switched to the number 30 we'd worn with the Pies, but which had been occupied by Peter Hamilton on his arrival at Melbourne. <1984> was his only full season at Melbourne, culminating in a second Brownlow Medal in <1984>. An old back complaint cost Moore six weeks in <1985>, restricting him to 16 games for the season again. That year he was rumoured to be on a recruiting wishlist, with the suggestion that Melbourne would be happy to let him go if paid. He stayed, adding a further 16 games in <1986>.

Further back trouble delayed Moore's start to <1987>, and after seven games he dropped out of the side with a hamstring injury just as the club began their run to the finals. He retired late in the year when the injury reoccurred. In <1988> he returned to Eltham, coaching them to a premiership the next year.

Moore's son Darcy joined as a father/son player, debuted in <2015>, and later captained the Pies.
