The greasy surface caused havoc in the first quarter, with South players struggling to stay upright and the ball proving difficult to pick up. Melbourne had the advantage of the breeze in the first quarter but could only break even at two goals apiece.
Melbourne had the best of the second and third quarter, extending their lead by four points going into the last quarter. South struck back in the last quarter and Melbourne's defence had to work hard to keep them at bay. They kept chipping away at the lead, and after several minutes battering away at Melbourne's defence they kicked a goal in the last minute to win the game.
