Fitzroy were a worthy opposition across the first three quarters, led chiefly by an attack who were deadly accurate when kicking for goal. It took until the last term before Melbouren finally asserted themselves and confirmed victory. A late goal gave the home side a slight lead at quarter time, then in the second term it was Melbourne cutting the gap to under a goal in the dying minutes.

After a goal-for-goal start to the third quarter Melbourne booted away late to open a 17 point gap. Fitzroy opened the last quarter with a goal, before missing three shots. It was their undoing, allowing the Demons to go down the other end and kick three in a row to win the game.

Maurie Gibb was reported for time wasting, but for the second week in a row he was found not guilty at the tribunal. A week earlier he'd been booked for striking but had beaten the charge.

Mueller, Beames and Heal were best in the victory which lifted Melbourne to second, level on games won with Carlton and behind them by just one percentage.

Ted Cordner, McGrath and Baggott were best. Dowsing was 19th man in the selected side.
