Melbourne jumped out of the blocks with lightning speed, kicking five goals in the first fifteen minutes. The listless Geelong struck back with four goals late in the first quarter to cut the margin to 19 points at the first break but were on their way to their biggest loss in four years.
That was as good as it got for the visitors as the Demons added 7.4 to 0.6 over the next two quarters to put the result beyond doubt. Melbourne dominated from the first bounce, and used their aerial superiority to take control of the match.
Geelong had lost their regular centreman with a knee injury before the match, and his absence allowed Melbourne's midfielders to take control. The Demons had their own injury issues with wingman Ian McLean out of the selected side with an ankle injury, but with both players the Cats tried to use as a replacement centreman handily beaten and Melbourne's ruck division well on top they were impossible to beat.
The Cats didn't score a goal in the second or third quarter, and conceded four goals to nil in the third quarter to drop further behind before adding four in the last quarter as Melbourne eased off.
Best were Denis Cordner, Clyde Laidlaw and Noel Clarke. Noel Baker replaced McLean in the selected side and Christie replaced John Beckwith who injured his ankle. Other Melbourne players hurt were Clarke (ankle), Williams (ankle) and Melville (knee).
