Ian Ridley blasted his players after their limp round 1 loss to the Saints and was rewarded with a fighting come from behind victory in Melbourne's last ever game at Glenferrie Oval.

After having been behind all day the Best on Ground Greg Wells helped lift them over the line in a final term where the lead changed hands five times. His goal at the 27 minute mark gave the Demons the lead before Ross Brewer extended the margin at the 30 minute mark.

The siren was celebrated by a frenzied ground invasion of young Demons supporters, but the only problem was that Hawk Wayne Bevan was still trying to kick for goal. The result didn't hinge on Bevan's finish, and he still converted the despite the ground being swamped by children to make the final margin less than a goal.

It was Melbourne's first win at Glenferrie Oval since <1967>. Though even in victory Melbourne’s form was far from that of a finals contender, Carl Ditterich was still comfortable in angrily reacting to the criticism of his Round 1 performance in a television appearance, arguing that he’d been unfairly treated since joining the club.

Best were Wells, Giampaolo and Molloy. First gamers John Cumming and Shane Fitzsimmons were both unused reserves.
