Debuted as a 17-year-old after impressing during the <1973> pre-season, and was then in and out of the side over seven seasons. His most productive year was <1978> where he played 17 games as a half-forward and received his only Brownlow Medal vote.
Fitzsimmons finished sixth in that year's best and fairest, but after beginning the <1979> season with the Demons he was told his services were no longer required. He trained with St Kilda, and they were keen to sign him but couldn’t afford Melbourne’s $20,000 demands. Fitzsimmons instead moved to side West Perth. He played 92 games until <1983> and won their best and fairest in <1980>.
At Albury from <1985> to <1986>, then joined ACT side Manuka Weston in <1987> after training with . Coached Shepparton in <1997> and <1998>.
