The Demons had won two in a row against the Eagles by under a goal - the 1988 Elimination Final and a pre-season match - and did it again. After a disappointing first three quarters it was Earl Spalding, back in WA after being criticised for his performance for their state side during the week, who tore the game apart with three last quarter goals to get his team over the line.
The winning goal fell to Tom Kavanagh, who had spent most of the day on the bench and wouldn't play for the Demons again. Just seconds before the siren Eagle Geoff Miles took a mark 60 metres out, but attempting to play on his kick was smothered by Danny Hughes and Melbourne held on to win.
It was West Coast's third loss in a row by under 10 points, and they were unlucky to lose having dominated every aspect of the game other than the scoreboard. Even John Northey admitted to being lucky to win.
Best were Steven Stretch, who had 18 kicks in the second half, and Jim Stynes.
