Thomas served in the First World War from May 1918 until the conflict ended. The half-back flanker then played for side Oakleigh, before joining Melbourne in <1921>. Thomas represented the VFL against the Ballarat League in his first season. He played every game in <1922>, but missed eight games due to suspension in <1923> and only played three matches.

Returning to his best in <1924>, Thomas was made vice-captain and played for the VFL against a Bendigo league team. He later represented the VFL again in <1927> against a Wimmera League combination. Thomas was one of the key contributors to the 1926 Grand Final victory, and he played two more seasons before returning to Oakleigh in <1929>.

After three years - including two premierships - Thomas rejoined Melbourne in <1932> and played one season, after which he returned to Oakleigh for a third time to coach their .

Thomas served in the First World War from May 1918 until the conclusion of the conflict. His grandson Leon Baker played 86 games for Essendon between 1984 and 1988.
