INTRODUCTION

This document sets out the new noble families which emerged in northern Italy after the 14th century. Earlier nobility is shown in the companion documents NORTHERN ITALY (1) and NORTHERN ITALY (2). The cut-off dates between the three documents is inevitably approximate.

By the 14th and 15th centuries, leading local families in major cities, such as the Este (in Ferrara and Modena, see the corresponding separate document MODENA, FERRARA), the Gonzaga (in Mantua), the Medici (in Florence) and the Visconti (in Milan, see the document MILAN), were forging powerful principalities out of their own domains. They provided new leadership to the nobility in northern Italy whose influence on European history continued well into the 17th and 18th centuries. The present document includes chapters on the newly emerged leadership in the cities of Bologna, Concordia, Florence, Mantua, Rimini and Urbino. The presentation is, in most cases, in outline form, into which primary source data can be inserted when it has been located.

The rise of the Farnese in Parma, illegitimate descendants of Pope Paul III who died in 1549, falls outside the time period covered by the_Medieval Lands_ project.
