I usually use either the elvis or vim text editor, greatly enhanced versions of vi, featuring windows, mouse capability and many other conveniences. Both are truly excellent. Elvis' advantages are
- elvis has a customizable X11 GUI
- elvis has a very nice HTML mode, for somewhat-WYSIWYG editing of HTML files
- the elvis documentation is much cleaner, using HTML
Here is information on elvis:
- Elvis source. (Go to the "unreleased" subdirectory for new beta versions.)
- Official elvis documentation.

The latter are much better than ordinary vi (and far, far better than pico). X11 mouse capability; subwindows (even on nongraphics terminals); infinite undo; paragraph formatting and so on.
