Hm. I also want to work with tar and tar.gz files. Is there any intend to add a tarfile module to the Python library? [...]

There are a couple of implementations around. Shouldn't be hard to add some to the standard library. OTOH, I'm not sure if any of them include GNU extensions. I wouldn't like to see a module in the standard library without them.
