Yukon, the birthplace of country music star Garth Brooks, marks the beginning of the Oklahoma City metro area. Yukon is served by three exits; Exit 136 (OK 92), Exit 137 (Cornwell Dr./Czech Hall Rd.), and Exit 138 (OK 4). Just after the OK 4 exit is the Kilpatrick Turnpike. The toll road connects Interstate 40 to Interstate 35 and Interstate 44 in northeast Oklahoma City. After the Kilpatrick Turnpike, the highway enters west Oklahoma City, with exits for Morgan Rd. (Exit 140), Council Rd. (Exit 142), Rockwell Ave. (Exit 143), MacArthur Blvd. (Exit 144), and Meridian Ave. (Exit 145). After a half-interchange at Portland Ave. (Exit 146), Interstate 40 meets Interstate 44. Now we get closer to one of the most fun parts of Interstate 40 to drive on in the country. Between Interstate 44 and Interstate 35, the highway travels parallel to Reno Ave., which marks the north-south boundary in Oklahoma City. (Going north from Reno is N.W. 1st, and so on,, going south from Reno is S.W. 1st and so on) After the Western Ave. exit (Exit 149A), Interstate 40 enters the crumbling Crosstown Bridge. The bridge is about two miles long and its traffic counts are way over what it was built for 40 years ago! The bridge features narrow shoulders and short acceleration and deceleration lanes, but then again, what else is new; this is Oklahoma! But the Crosstown is scheduled to be replaced by 2010 with a new street-level alignment, which will run along approximately S.W. 7th St., which is seven blocks to the south of its current alignment along Reno. If the Bricktown entertainment district is your destination, use Exit 151A (Lincoln Blvd.) if going east and use Exit 150C (Robinson Ave.) if going west. Better yet, you could take Interstate 235 North from Interstate 40 West and go to its Exit 1C (Sheridan Ave.), and the off-ramp puts you at the eastern end of Bricktown. After leaving the Crosstown, Interstate 40 intersects Interstate 35 and Interstate 235 at Exits 151B-C. Interstate 35 traffic goes down to one lane in each direction here, but Interstate 40 retains three lanes on eastbound and two lanes on westbound for through traffic. Just east of that interchange, the interstate widens to ten lanes (five in each direction) as Interstate 35 duplexes for a mile. After Interstate 35 splits from Interstate 40, the interstate enters the Mid-Del area. Del City and Midwest City are accessed from several exits: Exit 155A (Sunnylane Rd.), Exit 155B (S.E. 15th St.), Exit 156A (Sooner Rd.), Exit 156B (Hudiburg Dr., which accesses more car dealerships than anything else), Exit 157A (S.E. 29th St.), Exit 157B (Air Depot Blvd.), and Exit 159B (Douglas Blvd.). In eastern Midwest City, the interstate is squeezed between S.E. 29th St. to the north and TInker Air Force Base to the south. From Air Depot to Douglas, the interstate is a bit narrow with several curves to keep your attention. After the Douglas Blvd. exit, the speed limit increases to 70 as Interstate 40 leaves the hustle and bustle of the city behind. Interstate 240 traffic merges onto Interstate 40 East around mile marker 165 (there is access from Interstate 240 West from Interstate 40 West, but not from Interstate 40 East). Three more interchanges provide access to rural areas in southeast Oklahoma City: Exit 166 (Choctaw Rd.), Exit 169 (Peebly Rd.), and Exit 172 (Harrah-Newalla Rd.) After that, the highway enters Pottawatomie County, and the old button copy signs seen on the interstate since El Reno go bye-bye, as all of the signs from here to Arkansas have been replaced with reflective signs in the past few years. The signs between Exit 176 and Exit 237 in Henryetta are the newest as they were replaced in the summer of 2003.
