Bristol was one of the earliest British aircraft manufacturers, founded in 1910. It was unusually well-funded and well-managed and soon proved successful. The company diversified into aircraft engine manufacture in 1920, when the Air Ministry pressured the company into acquiring the rights to the Jupiter engine. The improved Jupiter II was the first British engine to exceed 400 hp (298 kW).
Bristol's main factory was the largest single aircraft factory in the world when the Second World War broke out in Europe.
Bristol manufactured the Albacore, Beaufighter, Beaufort, Blenheim,Stanraer, Swordfish, Vildebeeste, Walrus, and Wellington aircraft. Its aircraft engine subsidiary produced the Mercury, Pegasus, Perseus, Hercules and Taurusaircraft engines. The company began development of turboprop engines towards the end of the war, but these did not see operational use.
