What is Metadata?

Metadata simply defined is information about information. Its purpose is to assist in resource discovery by allocating precise descriptors to a document or resource. As such, it helps to identify, organize and consequentially assist in the location and retrieval of digital information by end-users. In other words, digital bibliographic information.

All the data accessible from SIOExplorer has metadata associated with it. For more information, see Digital Library Infrastructure.

How does SIOExplorer utilize geographic search and/or display?

SIOExplorer utilizes Google Maps within the Geo Search.

In the results page for every search, you have the option to "View Results in Google Earth." This link will take you to a single KML file, which includes tracklines and icons for data discovered in the SIOExplorer search interface. Please visit Google Earth to download, or learn more about the stand-alone Google Earth Program.
