The South African MDASat is a constellation consisting of three identical 2U CubeSat which will use Automatic Identification System (AIS) data to censor ship activities within South Africas Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). They were developed at the French South African Institute of Technology (FSATI), of CPUT (Cape Peninsula University of Technology), Cape Town, South Africa, based on the ZACUBE 2 (ZA 004) prototype.
The MDASat-1 constellation is equipped with an improved automatic identification system (AIS) receiver from its predecessor, ZACube-2, using its SDR-based payload. MDASat-1 can receive messages on the AIS and AIS long range channels.
