James Carmichael Smyth1

James Carmichael Smyth was born on 23 February 1742.1 He was the son of Thomas Carmichael and Margaret Smyth.2 He married Mary Holyland, daughter of Thomas Holyland and Mary Elton, on 9 November 1775 at Gretna Green, Dumfries-shire, ScotlandG.1 He died on 18 June 1821 at age 79.1
He was given the name of James Carmichael at birth.1 He graduated with a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.)1 He twice received the thanks of Parliament and a grant of £5,000 for valuable public services.1 He claimed the dormant titles of Earl of Hyndford, Viscount Inglisberry and Nemphlar, Lord Carmichael of Carmichael, Lord Carmichael and Baronet Carmichael.1 His name was legally changed to James Carmichael Smyth.1 He was Physician Extraordinary to King George III.1 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.)1 He held the position of 23rd Chief of the Name and Arms of Carmichael from.1 He was Censor of Royal College of Physicians, twice.1 He lived at Aithernie, Fife, ScotlandG.1

Maj.-Gen. Sir James Carmichael Smyth, 1st Bt.1

Maj.-Gen. Sir James Carmichael Smyth, 1st Bt. was born on 22 February 1780.2 He was the son of James Carmichael Smyth and Mary Holyland.2 He married Harriet Morse, daughter of General Robert Morse, on 28 May 1816.2 He died on 4 March 1838 at age 58.2

Major Henry William Carmichael Smyth was the son of James Carmichael Smyth and Mary Holyland.2 He married Anne Becher, daughter of John Harman Becher and Harriet Cowper, on 13 March 1817 at Cawnpore, IndiaG.1,3 He died on 9 September 1865.4
He was educated at Charterhouse School, Godalming, Surrey, EnglandG.1 He gained the rank of Major in the Bengal Engineers.1 He was the Governor between 1822 and 1824 at Addiscombe Military College, Addiscombe, London, EnglandG.1

Anne Becher1

Anne Becher was born on 13 October 1792 at Kilshenaghur, IndiaG.2 She was the daughter of John Harman Becher and Harriet Cowper.3,4 She was baptised on 12 July 1793.2 She married, firstly, Richmond Makepeace Thackeray, son of William Makepeace Thackeray and Amelia Richmond Webb, on 13 October 1810 at IndiaG.1,5 She married, secondly, Major Henry William Carmichael Smyth, son of James Carmichael Smyth and Mary Holyland, on 13 March 1817 at Cawnpore, IndiaG.1,2 She died on 31 December 1864 at age 72.1
From 13 October 1810, her married name became Thackeray.1 From 13 March 1817, her married name became Carmichael Smyth.1
