Notes:
Rescue vessel Pinto (requisitioned on July 9-1943) was on her 5th voyage as rescue vessel, having started this voyage from Clyde with the westbound convoy ON 247 on Aug. 2-1944, to Halifax Aug. 13 - returning with Convoy HX 305 Aug. 27. Pinto picked up survivors from the torpedoed Empire Heritage, but as it turned out this was to be her first and final rescue, because Pinto was herself sunk by the same U-boat (U-482) on Sept. 8-1944. Arnold Hague's "Convoy Rescue Ships" says the following: "Statistics are confused, the PSTO reports say that 41 of Pinto's company were picked up and 16 lost, giving a total crew of 57. Lloyd's records that the crew comprised 62 (41 crew, 16 DEMS, 3 medical and 2 signalmen) with 21 casualties (12 crew, 8 DEMS, 1 signalman). PSTO seems to have omitted the RN personnel but included the DEMS! Empire Heritage had on board 77 crew, 11 DEMS and 73 "Distressed British Seamen" ie survivors of previous sinkings, men discharged from ships abroad ill etc. who were taking passage back to Britain. 52 of her crew, 8 DEMS and 53 DBS were lost in the sinking according to Lloyd's, giving 48 survivors, Rescue Service records list only 46 picked up." The trawler HMS Northern Wave picked up many of the survivors of Pinto as well as those of Empire Heritage. This external page has more details on Pinto's sinking, and this page, also external, has more on the loss of Empire Heritage.

Commodore A. L. Owens R.N.R. was in Norwegian Abraham Lincoln, Vice Commodore was F. Ratsey R.N. in Umgeni. Commodore's notes are not available.

Please note that more information on all the Norwegian ships listed in this convoy can be found with the help of the index below.
