This statue was probably erected at the time of the war against Nabis of Sparta, when Telemnastos led a contingent of 500 Cretans ( Polybios, 33.16.6 ); see H.-U. Wiemer, " Krieg, Handel und Piraterie", pp.170-171 with n.13 ( Google Books ).

The wrought bronze reveals this image of the [? appearance], but deeds of daring are virtue among mortals. In exchange for these, Telemnastos, exultant son of Antiphatas, excelling leader of the alliance, the League of Cretans set you up after victory in the spear - for it is holy for noble men to honour the good - as a beautiful dedication to you, lord Asklepios, here in Epidauros. Gortyn rejoices over these matters, the exultant fatherland of this man.
