Overview
The canton was formed on 31 March 1992.

Flag
The flag of Pedernales, designed by Oswin Crespo, is composed of five horizontal stripes, three yellow and two blue. In the flag's left part is placed a green triangle.
Yellow symbolizes the canton's resources.
Blue symbolizes the purity of its environment, the sea that baths its coasts and its limpid sky.
Green symbolizes the profuse agricultural production.
