Most flags of Egyptian governorates are monocolor flags with the logo or the emblem of the governorate placed in the middle.
Jaume Ollé, 7 May 2000
By 2008 there were 26 governorates in Egypt. On April 18, 2008, two more governorates were formed (October 6th and Helwan), and another followed in 2009 (Luxor), so that in 2009 there were 29 governorates. On April 14, 2011, the governorates founded in 2008 on October 6 and Helwan were dissolved again, so that there have been a total of 27 governorates since then.
All governorates have a flag and a coat of arms, the latter in most cases not in accordance with the rules of European heraldry. The following development can be observed in the majority of governorates:
- 2006 mostly placement of a flag on the Internet, the specific date of acceptance usually cannot be determined, probably much older; on the flag, which is mostly monochrome, a symbol that characterizes the governorate
- 2010 revision of the symbols on the flags, from which development of an independent governorate coat of arms
- after 2010 revision of the flag, inclusion of the often modified coat of arms on the flag, often revision of the flag colour and the flag pattern
