The Flag
Kitakata City abolished its green flag adopted in 1968 and adopted the white flag on Jul 12th 2006 by Notice No 70 with the green and red new city emblem.

The city emblem and the flag were adopted on Jul 4th 2006 by Notice No 66 and 70. The white flag has a green and a red two color city emblem in the center. The city emblem is a stylized kanji 喜 Ki of Kitakata. The red color stands for a creation of the history and the tradition, the green color for a harmony with the nature and the coexistence. It represents an image of the citizen who seeks for a rich and healthy farming mountain villages and a vigorous life, a tourist city and freely jumps into the bright future. It also represents a soar of the city and the citizen. The flag proportion is 2:3. The height of the emblem is 3/5 height of the flag.

The stylised hiragana ki き forms a circular shape with points at the top and bottom, and wings ("airfoils"?) at the top. The 'wings' represent progress, while the circle represents harmony/reconciliation. The light orange colour is literally "skin colour".
