Niger Coast Protectorate (1893 - 1900) (original) (raw)

The Niger Coast Protectorate was a British Protectorate in the Oil Rivers areas of modern day Nigeria. It originally established as the Oil Rivers Protectorate in 1884 and this was confirmed at the Berlin Conference in the following year. It was renamed the Niger Coast Protectorate on 12 May 1893 and merged with the chartered territories of the Royal Niger Company on 01 January 1900 to form the protectorates of Northern Nigeria andSouthern Nigeria.

The Niger Coast Protectorate flew a British blue ensign defaced with the badge of the protectorate in the fly. The badge appeared as an amendment to the 1889 Admiralty Flag Book. The amendment slip was printed November 1895 and issued 05 June 1896. The ensign became obsolete in 1900.

Although the badge appeared in a flag book in 1896, the Protectorate was not transferred from the Foreign Office to the Colonial Office until 1899. This suggests that the badge was used for only a very short time, or perhaps not at all.

The Governor's flag followed the standard pattern and was a British Union Flag defaced with the badge of the Protectorate in the centre surrounded by a garland of laurel wreath.
