Background

Southern Nigeria was a British protectorate in the coastal areas of modern-day Nigeria formed in 1900 from union of the Niger Coast Protectorate and the territories under the administrative control of the Royal Niger Company below Lokoja on the Niger River. TheLagos Colony was added in 1906 and the territory was officially renamed the Colony and Protectorate of Southern Nigeria. In 1914, Southern Nigeria amalgamated with the Northern Nigeria Protectorate to form the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria.

Southern Nigeria Protectorate ensign

Southern Nigeria flew a blue ensign defaced with the badge of the protectorate in the fly.

The badges for Northern and Southern Nigeria were added to the 1889 Admiralty Flag Book by an amendment issued in March 1901. I have not seen the text that went with the illustrations and don't know whether the defaced Union Jacks were used by High Commissioners as well as Governors.
