Opmeer municipality
Number of inhabitants (1 Jan 2003): 11.200; area: 41,68 km². Settlements: Opmeer (seat), Aartswoud, De Weere, Gouwe, Hoogwoud, Spanbroek, Wadway, Zandwerven.
In 1959 the former municipalities of Spanbroek and Opmeer merged to form Opmeer municipality. Another merger took place in 1979, when Hoogwoud and Opmeer formed the new municipality of Opmeer.
The municipal council of Opmeer adopted on 12 Mar 1981 a flag, which united the colors of the former municipalities of Hoogwoud and Opmeer. Description: "A vertical red stripe to the hoist; on the fly three horizontal stripes, of which the central one is twice as wide as the others, colored blue - yellow - bluw; on the yellow stripe towards the hoist a red lion.
