Monster former municipality

On 1 Jan 2004 Monster merged with De Lier,´s-Gravenzande,Naaldwijken Wateringen, to form the new municipality of Westland.
Number of inhabitants (1 Jan 2003): 20.450; area: 20,15 km². Settlements: Monster (seat), Poeldijk, Ter Heijde. Birthplace of Gabriël Borstboom.
Flag: horizontal stripes of white, black, and white and at 1/3 of flaglenrth a lying crescent of 2/3 flagheight countercharged.

Granted 24 Jul 1816. It is derived from the arms of the van Polanen family, which was related to the Wassenaar (=crescent) family.
