About the flag
The flag is a gyronny of white over red with coat of arms in the centre.
Jorge Candeias, 29 Sep 1998
Visiting Aveiro on 28 Sep 2014 I spotted variants of the municipal flag:
The first had a scroll with black upper case letters (instead of the red onesmentioned below) (see central image above), and the other one had a small coat of arms, only a quarter of the normal one, i.e. half height and half width (see right image above).

Coat of arms
[.gif)](../images/p/pt-avr%29.gif)image by Sérgio Horta, 23 Oct 2014 This coat of arms is one of the most “heraldical” municipal arms around here, in my opinion: apart from the typical 5-towered mural crown, it has the collar of tower and sword, a scroll reading "CIDADE | DE | AVEIRO" with the originality that the writing is in red letters and not in black ones, as usual, (see left image above) and a green shield charged with a silver eagle armed red, a golden sun to the left of the eagle and a silver moon to the right. Both the sun and the moon are “humanized”. The eagle is charged with an inescutcheon, pointy, with the portuguese quinas and a golden border.

Presentation of Aveiro
Aveiro is a city located close to the shore, by a salt marsh (lagoon) called "ria de Aveiro", which brought it the nickname of Portuguese Venice or Venice of the Vouga (this is the main river that ends in the marsh). It is the head of the district with its name, and belonged to the old province of Beira Litoral, also Beira Litoral is the name of the region it will possibly be a part of in the future.
The municipality has an area of 199,8 km², and a population of more than 68 100 inhabitants, distributed in 14 communes. The economy is varied, but, as in most of our urban areas, the sector of services predominates. It is also an important fishing port.
