Žiar nad Hronom is in central Slovakia, 30 km southwest of Banská Bystrica. There is a 16th century castle, rebuilt in the 18th century.

Žiar nad Hronom (Hungarian: Garamszentkereszt, German: Heiligenkreuz) has 21 156 inh (1990 census). The city was in Bars (in Slovakian Tekov) County of Hungary till 1918/1920 (Czechoslovakian Occupation).

The new canting Coat of Arms with cross between rays and with water in the base. Historical name Svätý Kríz nad Hronom ("the Holy Cross upon the Hron"). The modern name Žiar means "shine".
