While true, it’s more that "vaandel" derives from "vendel", which was a diminutive form of "vaan". "Vaan", then is related to "Fahne" in German.

What is still in use in Dutch is the diminutive of "vaan": "vaantje", which more or less translates to pennant, in the sense of a sports pennant.
