Description
Limestone has, from a very early date, been quarried in this township, but has given place to the very much more important industry of coal mining, which was commenced in 1857, and is extensively carried on at the Ryhope Colliery, by the Ryhope Coal Company, Limited. Here there are nearly 2000 men and boys employed in and about the pit, which is at present working the Maudlin seam, 7 feet thick, at a depth of 270 fathoms. From the Hutton seam below, which is 4 feet thick, the coals are drawn to the level of the Maudlin by means of a drift. The daily output amounts to about 2200 tons, a small quantity of which is converted into coke on the premises.
Ryhope Colliery Village is chiefly composed of pitmen's dwellings of uninviting aspect which extend in long rows of nearly a mile in length, and form the north and western portion of the village. The south and south-eastern portion, which is almost built up to the old village, comprises the more important buildings and business places, and presents a somewhat better appearance. Along the main street are built the various chapels, a school, the miners' hall, and numerous shops, including large Cooperative Stores.
At Ryhope Colliery there are colliery schools for boys, girls, and infants. In the boys' there is accommodation for 337, the attendance being 300. The girls' is attended by 225, and the infants' by about 200.
The Miners Hall is a large brick building, built in 1880, and recently improved, the total cost amounting to £1800. It comprises large lecture hall, with seating for 800, reading, recreation, and billiard room, also committee and secretary's room. There is a library attached, containing over 200 volumes.
